Yom Hashoah
“History is what happened to someone else, memory is what happened to us.” This simple yet profound statement is one way to understand how we as Jews approach our holidays and commemorations - they are not simply events of the past, they are events sewn into the very fabric of our being, “We were slaves to Pharoah in Egypt…,” “In every generation we must see ourselves as though we came out of Egypt…,” “At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring; we remember them…”.
Our tradition gives us opportunities to engage in that
sacred act of memory.
