Marcy Danish Mitzvah Award was established in memory of Marcy Danish, a former member of Community Synagogue of Rye, who was a wonderful person who always made time to help others. This award goes to one seventh grade student who has demonstrated the fulfillment of mitzvot in behavior or action over the past year.
Mazal Tov to Caroline McCormack, this year’s winner!
Below is a portion of her award-winning essay:
Hi, my name is Caroline McCormack. For my mitzvah project, I am volunteering at Kid’s Space of Rye. Kid’s Space provides an affordable and reliable, high-quality program of childcare and enrichment for students in the Rye City School District. The program is held at the Osborn School and the YMCA and is open from 7 am until 6 pm. There is a breakfast club, afterschool Kindergarten program and after school program. I started this program for my mitzvah project, but I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I do. If I am having a bad day, the kids change that. They make everything fun and put a huge smile on my face. I’ve always like being with kids and occasionally babysit, but working at Kid’s Space has taught me how important it is to be a good role model and set a good example for kids.
I volunteer at the after-school program at the Osborn School. I go once a week, but wish I could go more often. The kids who are in the program do their homework, play, watch movies, do crafts, make friends and have a great time after school. Kid’s Space is a happy place. I love walking in and seeing their smiling faces and want to play with them. Going to Kid’s Space is the best part of my day because I love to play with them and make them laugh. Sometimes when I am in town, I bump into the kids I met from Kid’s Space. The kids that I formed close relationships with are like my little brothers and sisters that I never had and always wanted. It is a great feeling when you and a kid have something in common, like playing sports. I came from lacrosse practice the other day and it was fun to have a lacrosse catch with the kids and teach them some of the basics. Part of my mitzvah project is collecting school supplies for the kids in the program. If I win the Marcy Danish Mitzvah Scholarship Award, I’d like to donate $100 to Kid’s Space.
I’ve had the chance to help with homework, play games inside and outside, do crafts, play board games, organize bins with teachers and just hang out with the kids. I love living and growing up in Rye. It’s nice being a part of a local program where I see familiar faces. My brother and sister are friends with the Director’s son and one of the star Rye Garnet quarterbacks is an assistant teacher at Kid’s Space. I want to volunteer at Kid’s Space through high school and hopefully when I graduate.
